Life Came at Me Fast

You know those commercials for Nationwide Insurance where the couple walks out of a hospital, placing their newborn in the car seat, only to see a grown man in the newborn’s place when they climb in? The “Life Comes at You Fast” slogan? Yeah, that’s what’s happened to us.

Six months ago we brought our second child home from the hospital, and it seems like it was just yesterday. In the five months since I wrote last, plenty has changed. Outside of having a new little life to care for, the biggest change for me has been a job transition.

I used to be a full-time Director of Systems/Operations for Admissions at a small (~3300) private university. Multiple factors played into my shift, but I am now half-time Admissions Sys/Ops, and half-time IT developer/sys admin.

Those two major events, plus being guaranteed that at least one of the two kids will wake up in the middle of the night (multiple times), adds up to zero energy for blogging. I feel like, however, I’m settling into a rhythm with how life is now, and I’ve got the energy to get this exercise in writing on its feet again.

Enough of this…the tech talk will be around the bend shortly.

Crappy Monday

As was noted in the comments over at SlackerManager, this site was down for the better part of today. There’s another blog on my web hosting account that I serve that has been hosing Apache for the entire server. I’ve been given a bit of a reprieve from the host, and I’ll be migrating all of my sites to a more stable environment over the next few days. I’m sure I’ll give the full story here at some point — at least my side of the story.

That said, there will probably be another bit of downtime as I go through the migration process. It’s not as painful as it once was, now that WordPress has a built in feature for importing/exporting WordPress content. I just migrated a friend’s blog to the new server, and it was a breeze. Tuesday is better than Monday, but it’s still not close enough to Friday for it to make a difference.

SlackerManager Loves Me

I just want to say welcome to everyone coming from SlackerManager. I actually have to give him a bit of credit for this being started.

It’s very common for him to come into my office with some new idea for a fun project or money-making idea. He’s very entrepreneurial like that. I normally wouldn’t have started something like this, so he’s rubbed off on my a little bit.

Because he’s so full of ideas he’s always coming up with some new way to improve our processes. It’s often with a specific tool or solution in mind, and he just needs my “tech eyes” to review it. Sometimes it is with the two part question of “is this build-able, and can you build it?” Some of the stuff I end up posting will be a result of us looking at it for use in our office.

Ok, enough with singing the praises of Bren. It’s not like he’s Steve Jobs or anything.
