ENTER Excel

More Excel love. I was working on a report a couple of weeks ago, and knew it was possible to have multiple lines of text in a cell, but didn’t know how to do it. I know that with some HTML editors (e.g. Nvu) you can hold Shift + Enter to have a line break rather than a paragraph break, so I started messing around with keystroke combinations using the Enter key. Here’s the rundown on keystrokes I found.

  • Enter - calculates the cell then changes cells, default is Down; changed through Tools > Options > Edit tab > Move Selection After Enter, Direction
  • Shift + Enter - calculates the cell then changes cells, default is Up; opposite of what is set for Move Selection After Enter
  • Ctrl + Enter - calculates the cell, and leaves the current cell as the selected cell
  • Alt + Enter - this will enter a line break in the body of the cell; I used this when setting up the header row of my report, when the column header is long but I want the column to be narrow, placing the text in multiple lines

This is the action in Excel 2003. Any other versions?
