“I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life’s realities.” - Dr. Seuss

Firefox Search Box Keys

There are two keystrokes related to the built-in Firefox search box that I love.

Ctrl-k on Windows, Cmd-k on Mac, and Ctrl-j on Linux selects the search box. Until I found this I would do Alt-D/Cmd-L to select the Location Bar, and then Tab to the search box.

Once you are in the search box you can use Ctrl-Up/Down Arrow (Cmd-Up/Down Arrow on Mac) to cycle through the search engines.

Interestingly, if you’ve taken the search box off of the browser and hit the keystroke it will take you to the default Firefox Google search page, and focus your cursor on the search box.

  2. Ctrl+E also goes to the search box in Firefox 2 and above. It’s the more usual shortcut for search on Windows and isconsistent with Internet Explorer 7 and Outlook 2007.
